My name is Curtis Grace and I am 13 years old.
On January 4, 2010
I was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. I am currently undergoing treatment and recovering from my recent bone marrow transplant.
I enjoy being with my family and hanging out with my friends ridng my bike, skating boarding, playing my xbox and playstation. I am an honor roll student in the 7th grade. I like to play sports. I can't wait to be back on my football team and my basketball team. Basketball is my favorite sport.
I am hoping to get well so I can go back to my normal life. I pray every night for God to keep me safe. My mom and dad have been by me as they always are.
I never knew what Leukemia was. This is what I now know:
Leukemia is a cancer that originates in the bone marrow. This blood-related cancer involves the uncontrolled growth of cells with similar functions and origin.
Leukemia is not an inherited disease. Instead, it results from a genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell which develops abnormally and multiplies, eventually interfering with the production of healthy blood cells. Without healthy blood cells, the body is unable to protect itself against infections.
Leukemia starts in the bone marrow, and usually spreads quickly into the blood, affecting white blood cells. Over time, it can spread to lymph nodes, spleen, liver, the covering of the brain and spinal cord, spinal fluid, and other organs. |
